China International Import Expo (CIIE), a new platform for brands to take off in China
The 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE) was held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai from 5th to 10th in November 2021. The focusing topic of this year is green and low carbon. Nearly 3,000 exhibitors from 127 countries and regions came to the exhibition, showing brand images and R&D power. Some brands brought their latest cutting-edge technologies and innovative products for the first time in China, while other exhibitors brought their feathered products to enter the China market.
Why is CIIE a good platform for China market entry
1. CIIE is support by the Chinese government
China International Import Expo, short as CIIE, is organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, China International Import Expo Bureau and the National Convention and Exhibition Center (Shanghai).
2. CIIE is a top tier exhibition across different industries
The CIIE is the first exhibition in the world with the focus of import on national level. In 2021, it attracted nearly 3,000 exhibitors from 127 countries and regions. The exhibition area is around 366,000 square meters. 422 new products, services and technologies are introduced during the exhibition. 281 of the Fortune 500 enterprises and industry leading companies participated in CIIE this year. Moreover, 120 companies joined the exhibitions 4 years in the row. The enterprise exhibition consisted of six zones: Food and agricultural products, automobiles, technology and equipment, consumer goods, medical devices and healthcare and service trade.
3. The CIIE exhibition brings real orders

Although the CIIE is strongly affected by the COVID-19 and many exhibitors couldn’t participate in the CIIE 2021, the intentional deals still reached 70.72 billion USD. With more attention are being paid to CIIE, the intentional deals shall be continually increasing after the pandemic.
Case of Gorilla’s Coffee
The Gorilla’s Coffee was totally new to the Chinese market before the first CIIE. Rwanda Farmers Coffee Company introduced their coffee products during the CIIE 2018 and keeps participating in the CIIE since then.
According to David Ngarambe, CEO of the company, through Chinese E-commerce platforms, their coffee products were sold out in a very short time
Rwandan Ambassador to China James Kimonyo (left) joined a livestreaming session on site of CIIE. Through the live streaming 40,000 packs of Rwandan coffee beans were sold out.
Future outlook of CIIE and China market entry
On Nov. 7th 2021, the Global Trade Facilitation and Cross-border E-commerce Development Forum are held during CIIE. The main topics were development of cross-border e-commerce under global multilateral cooperation, expansion of digital trade, analysis of the development trend of international trade facilitation, cultivation of new dynamics of digital trade and exploration of global cross-border business opportunities. All these topics indicate that through cross-border e-commerce, there are still many opportunities for global small and middle-sized companies to expand business in China. By Nov.7th, 2021, there are already 50 exhibitors registered in CIIE in 2022. We recommend brands to participate in the CIIE as a tribute platform to enter Chinese market.
